Torii Gate at Itsukushima Shrine

Torii Gate at Itsukushima Shrine

Part of Japan's obsession with the three best of everything, the view of this torii gate is one of the "Three Views of Japan". The gate was first constructed in 1168, however the current one dates from 1875. An integral part of a Shinto shrine, the torii gate signifies the entrance to a sacred space, a place that gods inhabit.
